Programme Aim:

This course is a one year intensive programme in office technology. It is designed for mature students and for those who may have left the world of work and who now wish to return.  The aim of the course is to provide students with skills, training and confidence that will enable them to pursue a career in the modern office environment. Successful students will be awarded a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Office Administration. All students complete a two week work experience placement as part of their studies on this course.

A minimum of 8 modules must be completed for certification made up of mandatory and electives, see list opposite. Choice of modules is decided by CCFE and subject to annual staffing/college resources.

Progression/Career Opportunities:

Successful graduates of this course may progress to a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Business here at Castlebar College of Further Education.  Alternatively they may choose to complete a Level 7 or Level 8 in a related field in an Institute of Technology or University.  Employment opportunities exist in office administration and IT positions in the public sector.

  • Leaving Certificate/LCVP or Leaving Certficate Applied
  • A FETAC Level 4 qualification

Duration:

This is a one-year course and runs from September to May.  It is planned to run this course mornings only from 9.30 am – 1.00 pm.

Medical and Legal Secretary Level 5

Programme Aim:

This course is orientated towards the use of computer applications in the business, healthcare and legal sectors and aims to equip students with the skills to operate efficiently as a medical or legal secretary.  Students receive specialised training in the use of medical terminology which will assist them to secure employment in healthcare/hospital administration. Students will also study the Irish legal system and gain an insight into the work of the legal profession.  Successful students will be awarded a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Office Administration.  All students complete a 2 week work experience placement as part of their studies on this course.

Programme Aim:

Students on this course will learn how to design and maintain their own website, operate a payroll system, set up and manage a computerised accounting system, participate on a two week work placement in a business of their choice, learn to communicate effectively within the business environment, produce quality business documents, create and modify spreadsheets using a wide range of advanced spreadsheet features and gain an in depth understanding of the role and function of management.  Successful students will be awarded a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Business.  All students complete a two week work experience placement as part of their studies on this course.

Progression/Career Opportunities:

Graduates can access a wide variety of careers at Junior Executive Level in the areas of Administration, Accounting and Financial Service in both the Private and Public Sectors.  Successful Graduates may progress to 3rd Level Education e.g.

Successful graduates of this course will be suited to work as a Clerk or Clerical Officer in the Civil Service and Local Government, as well as many other public and private sector organisations.
