There is a recognised need for a variety of qualified practitioners in the Social Care sector. This course is the ideal stepping stone to help you get to a 3rd Level qualification. A significant number of students have also gained employment in settings such as Residential Care Centres, Community Projects, Youth Centres, Centres for the Elderly/Aged, or assisting people with disabilities. All students complete a two week work experience placement as part of their studies on this course. Successful students will be awarded a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Applied Social Studies.
Extra courses/workshops may be provided such as Occupational First Aid (OFA 5N1207), Child Protection Guidelines, Drama & Creative Studies and RSA Workshop in Road Safety.
A minimum of 8 modules must be completed for certification made up of mandatory and electives, see opposite list. Choice of modules is decided by CCFE and subject to annual staffing/college resources.
There is a very strong 3rd level progression rate from this course. Retention of students at college is very high due to a good grounding in research and theory in relevant fields such as Psychology, Social Studies and Intercultural Studies. Locally there are degree courses in Social Studies in GMIT and Sligo IT and a wide range of related degree programmes throughout the country such as Arts/Social Sciences in Irish Universities and degree programmes in Community and Youth at NUI Maynooth.
